Fostering Hope -- Monday January 18th, 2010

Today, Saturday January 16, was a great day to be at the Cape Girardeau Petco. The Caruthersville Humane Society came up to do their first mobile adoption in association with Petco's National Adoption Event. To welcome our friends from the south, the active rescue representatives of Fostering Hope, a local Petco program, came in to insure this day was one to remember. PAWS from Perryville, Bootheel Area Animal Rescue of Sikeston and Silverwalk Hounds of Cape Girardeau all sent representatives to insure the Petco patrons had an educating and exciting experience while shopping for their own pets or considering the addition of a new pet. There are five very lucky puppies enjoying the warmth and love of their new families tonight. Something else that made this a red letter day involved Axl, the Pit Bull puppy that inspired a previous entry entitled Axlisms. If you have read my BLOG entries in the past, you may remember when I fostered this Pit Bull puppy for the Caruthersville Humane Society. He is the type of dog that I predicted was destined to do spectacular things. It looks as if that prediction may be coming true. My amazing, live-wire of a house guest was taken into a foster home that we hope will work into a permanent match. Normally, when we work to set up foster homes, it is as a temporary alternative to the shelter environment. In the case of Axl, he has been chosen as a possible candidate for Search and Rescue by one of our own local SAR trainers, Mr. Kevin Sharp and his wife Kiersten. Axl will immediately begin to learn the things a dog must know in order to provide a service that can bring home a missing loved one or locate survivors in times of disaster. Without even knowing that the things he loves to do are what make him so special, Axl started the next chapter of his life today. This dog that belongs to the most hated, misunderstood dog breed in the country, born into the worst circumstances life can offer, will now be working right at the side of one of the volunteers that will leave his home and family to help locate the lost. The tragedy we have watched unfold due to the earthquake in Haiti, is one example of the type of work our Search and Rescue teams train and prepare to face. To watch their dogs brave dangerous rubble piles and debris, without any hesitation, is awe inspiring. These dogs will search despite fatigue, foul air conditions or even weather. They cover more territory, in a more thorough manner than their human counter parts just using the senses they were born with and the training they have been given. Their reward is a chance to play with a toy and the happiness they feel from their handlers. Several of the United States Search and Rescue teams have already been deployed to Haiti. The rest, including our own Missouri teams are on stand by. Let's not forget to say an extra prayer the next few days and weeks for the citizens of Haiti, the dedicated rescue workers and the canines that prove dogs really are man's best friend.
